Both kinds, one catalog
Highlights contains the five semantic mark meanings. Callouts & Notes contains Markdown callouts plus app-owned PDF and notebook notes. Both is the default, grouped by Meaning so related thinking meets before format boundaries get in the way.
Across every supported origin
Filter by All, Notes, Daily Notes, Marks, Snips, PDFs, or Notebooks. Group the result by Meaning, Document, Source, or Date. An origin is where the authoritative object lives, not where a copy was imported.
Return to the original passage
Open a Markdown card to reveal its exact line, a capture card to reopen its editable Mark or Snip, a PDF card to return to its page, or a notebook card to return to the exact Markdown cell and text range. Retrieval is designed to resume work in the source, not trap the excerpt in a dashboard.
What rebuildable means
Markdown highlights and callouts remain syntax in the file. The separate catalog is a rebuildable projection populated by the same watcher and extraction path as search. If that cache disappears, the files still own the content and the catalog can be recreated.
PDF and notebook ownership
Original PDFs and .ipynb files are never modified. Their highlights and notes are authoritative app-owned local records. Disconnecting a source preserves PDF notes as Offline by default; Forget PDF notes is the separate explicit destructive choice.
Fingerprint protection
A PDF locator carries the source, relative path, SHA-256 content fingerprint, page, quote context, offsets, and page-space rectangles. Notebook highlights also carry cell identity and source context. If the original changes and a locator is no longer safe, ADHDNotes leaves the annotation unresolved rather than painting it over unrelated text.
Keep the text before removal
Right-click Export to enter selection directly in the Annotations list. Circle marks, Select all, Cancel, and Export create one portable Markdown note with When, Source, and the reconstructed object.
